There are many forms of cheating in poker, some that even are near impossible to catch. Firstly, you always have to be careful with your money. Before you sit down at a table, watch it play a few hands first. If you see it is going slowly, don't play there. For 2 reasons. Firstly, a slow table means less hands and for a good online poker player, that means less profits. The second reason being some people use instant messaging programs to cheat you out of your money. They tell accouter what cards they all have which gives them a significant advantage over you.
Most poker online now days are ring games, these consist of 10 (or so) players. These are hot spots for cheaters because they get more people in their cheating group to play there and they keep their profits high as they get more people to cheat out of their money. Don't let these guys get you, you can prevent it and you will lose money if you can't wait 2 minutes watching them play before you sit down with your money.
The most common form of cheating is in tournaments where there are a group of players who 'dump' chips on each other. When there are about 10 players who dump all the chips they get onto one play, that player is almost guaranteed a decent spot on the final table, even if he isn't the greatest player around (though he will probably be the best out of the group).
The only thing that stands in the way of these cheaters is that they don't start out at the same tables. But when they get to the same table, they begin dumping chips. Sadly there isn't a very effective way to fight this other then being better and luckier then they are.
Another form of cheating is co-operative cheating. Again, there have to be more then one player involved in this. This cheating is when 2 players (who know each other) raise and re-raise each other in a hand. Even the average poker players will realize that they are playing against people with really good hands and decide to duck for cover instead of calling. A lot of the time these players are doing this cheat with junky cards, so....We can take advantage of that right? ;)
Well, if you notice two players who constantly raise and re-raise each other, don't let them steal to much of your money, play along and when you get a hand which you reckon is gone win, call their raises and you should make a very tidy little profit.
